India–New Zealand FTA comes into force with new visa categories and zero-duty access for exports
The India–New Zealand FTA came into force on 20 October, The Hindu reported. It includes two new Temporary Employment Entry visa categories, called TEE visas, for Indian nationals. It also gives zero-duty access for Indian exports, according to the same report. The newspaper's excerpt did not list the products covered or the numbers of visas in each category.
A free trade agreement reduces or removes duties between the partners, and zero-duty access lowers the landed cost of exports in the partner market. Work-visa categories tie the trade pact to the movement of people.
Indian exporters and workers interested in New Zealand are the most direct beneficiaries, depending on which products and occupations are covered.
Supporters see the FTA as opening a duty-free market for Indian exporters and giving Indians a defined route for temporary work.
Cautious voices note that the benefit depends on the product lists and visa numbers, which the first report did not give.
Confirmed by The Hindu: the FTA is in force with two TEE visa categories and zero-duty access for exports. Not confirmed: the full tariff schedule and visa caps. Watch for official notifications listing covered goods.
