GRAP-1 curbs imposed in Delhi-NCR as air quality deteriorates to 'poor'
Livemint reported that the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan, or GRAP. The order came after Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) deteriorated to the 'poor' category. The curbs apply across Delhi-NCR. A roundup headline on the measures said they include no tandoor at eateries. The same headline said open burning of waste is prohibited. Another summary described them as the curbs under Grap-1.
GRAP is a staged system: Stage-I is the first and mildest response, and later stages add tighter restrictions if air quality worsens. Invoking it early tries to cap pollution from local sources such as waste burning and cooking fuel before it rises further.
If you live or work in Delhi-NCR, eateries and waste handlers face rules from now on. Residents with breathing problems may want to check AQI before going outdoors.
Supporters of early action argue that acting at the 'poor' stage can prevent a steeper slide and shows regulators are not waiting for 'severe' days. They see even small curbs as worthwhile.
Critics, as such measures often draw, say Stage-I rules are limited and can be hard to enforce on small eateries and informal waste burning. The reports seen did not include enforcement data.
Confirmed: Stage-I was invoked after AQI reached 'poor'. Not confirmed here: the AQI number and how the curbs will be enforced. Today, watch the daily AQI and whether CAQM moves to Stage-II.
