Drone sinks a ship off Bulgaria; 11 sailors missing
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said two merchant ships were hit by drones off Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast and one sank, the second such incident in a week (Reuters, via the Straits Times; AP; BBC). Reuters described the sunken vessel as Ukrainian-owned. The Guardian and CNA reported 11 crew members missing, and the Guardian said five had been rescued so far. Radev said he suspected Russia was behind the attack and summoned its ambassador (BBC, Bloomberg); the Financial Times wrote that Sofia suggested Russia was responsible. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the attacks another front of escalation of the Russian war in Ukraine (Straits Times).
Bulgaria is a European Union and NATO member, and attacks on ships near its waters put the Black Sea war close to member states and shipping lanes.
No direct effect on Malaysians; Black Sea shipping risks can reach grain and fuel prices over time.
The origin of the drones was described as unknown by the Guardian; Bulgaria’s suspicion of Russia is the prime minister’s view, not a finding. Watch for any evidence Sofia publishes.
