Five Malaysians held in Tokyo over 5kg of cocaine hidden in shoes

Four men and a woman from Malaysia were detained at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on suspicion of trying to smuggle about 5kg of cocaine hidden under shoe insoles (Berita Harian, FMT, Inquirer). Berita Harian said the drugs were worth about 120 million yen, or RM3.1 million, and that the arrests were on Saturday. FMT said the suspects flew from KLIA and that one claims he was offered RM8,000 to carry drugs abroad. Malaysiakini reported that the group had reportedly bypassed security at KLIA; DailyDrop saw only that headline and summary.

Drug-trafficking offences carry severe penalties in Japan and in Malaysia, and the case raises questions about airport screening.

Never carry items for strangers, however much you are paid; you are responsible for what is in your luggage.

The suspects are suspects, not convicts. The claim about bypassing KLIA security is from one outlet and is not confirmed.
