Haze leaves 19 areas unhealthy with Pasir Gudang worst at 180; more school closures are listed for today
Nineteen areas recorded unhealthy API readings at 8am on Tuesday, with Pasir Gudang the highest at 180 (NST, FMT). Malay Mail’s later update counted 20 stations in the unhealthy band and put Pasir Gudang at 181. FMT said the Klang Valley was moderate but Putrajaya, Johan Setia and Klang were near unhealthy, and that Sabah and Sarawak were affected again. The Straits Times reported that schools in Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and several other districts would close on Wednesday 14 October; DailyDrop saw that headline only. A parents’ group told FMT that more than 70% of Johor primary pupils did not follow online lessons, and The Star reported that parents were struggling with the closures. Firefly extended its Subang–Seletar cancellations to 14 October (Berita Harian, CNA, Straits Times, Al Jazeera). Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia will raise haze at an Asean foreign ministers’ meeting because the bloc’s disaster mechanism does not classify haze as a natural disaster (CNA, Malay Mail); Antara said he acknowledged Indonesia’s efforts. Berita Harian reported that Indonesia will not declare the fires a national disaster for now, and the Guardian said an El Niño-fuelled fire razed nearly 300 homes on Sumatra.
Closures hit working parents and children’s learning, and the pattern of closing day by day makes planning hard. The question of whether haze counts as a disaster decides whether regional help can be organised faster.
Check your state education notice each evening, since the Wednesday list is from one outlet. On unhealthy days keep children indoors and use a mask rated for fine particles outdoors. Check with Firefly before travelling to Seletar.
Malaysia says the bloc’s existing disaster tools do not cover haze and wants that fixed, while acknowledging Indonesia’s efforts (CNA, Antara).
Indonesia’s position, as Berita Harian reported it, is that the fires do not yet merit a national disaster declaration while the country keeps working on them.
The 19 and 20 counts and the 180 and 181 readings come from different hours and are not a contradiction. The Wednesday closure list is a single outlet’s headline, so verify it locally. The ASEAN meeting is a diplomatic step; the air improves only when the fires are put out.
