Sushi King wins its dispute with Customs over imported fish roe

The NST’s headline said “No caviar here” and reported that Sushi King won a dispute with Customs; the Malay Mail’s headline, “Close, but not caviar”, called it a tax dispute over imported fish roe that the restaurant chain won. Neither headline gave the sum at stake, the court or the tax code involved, and DailyDrop saw headlines only.

Whether an ingredient counts as caviar can change the duty charged on it, and the answer sets a marker for other importers of roe.

None for diners unless prices change.

A small case with a clear lesson: product classification decides the tax bill. We will not guess the amount.
