Atiku asks Tinubu to account for NNPC's N11.2 trillion in receivables

In a statement dated October 4 from his spokesman Phrank Shaibu, ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar asked the Tinubu government to publish the contracts, payments and results tied to N11.2 trillion that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited lists as receivables from the federation (Arise, Legit, Business Post, Guardian Nigeria). He pointed to a fall from about N17.5 trillion in 2024 to N11.2 trillion in 2025 and compared it with roughly N3.1 trillion for defence. Legit reports he named Tantita and the Chagoury family as contractors he links to the campaign. These are his claims; the government has not responded in the reports seen.

NNPC is the state oil firm and a major source of government revenue. Questions about what it is owed, and what it spends on pipeline security, go to the heart of oil accounting ahead of the 2027 elections.

Figures like these affect what states receive from the federation account each month. Keep in mind that campaign statements are advocacy, not audits.

The opposition says the receivables are too large to go unexplained.

The ruling side is likely to say receivables are routine accounting between agencies.

A single press statement cannot settle this. The test is whether NNPC or the finance ministry publishes a breakdown. Until then, treat both the N11.2 trillion and the contractor claims as unaudited.
