US employers add just 29,000 jobs in September as unemployment rises to 4.2 percent

The BLS reported 29,000 new US jobs in September against a Reuters forecast of about 90,000, with unemployment at 4.2 percent. Revisions removed about 60,000 jobs from July and August. Average hourly earnings rose 3 percent from a year earlier, below 3.4 percent inflation (UPI, Al Jazeera, SAN, Gulf Times). The report came a month before the November 3 midterm elections.

US data moves the dollar, interest rates and oil, all of which affect Nigeria's currency and revenue.

If the dollar eases, imported goods may stabilise over time, but do not expect a quick change in prices.

Some analysts say it shows a cooling economy that may need rate cuts.

Others say revisions make single months unreliable.

One weak month does not make a trend. The next two reports matter more.
