Police find the camp holding 20 abducted corps members in Imo, but say it is mined with explosives

Gunmen hijacked two buses near Umunoha, Mbaitoli, Imo State, on October 1 and took 19 or 20 prospective NYSC members headed from Ibadan to camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom (Guardian Nigeria, Blueprint, ThisDay, Arise, Legit, ICIR). By October 4 police said they had found the camp by drone but could not enter because it was reportedly mined with IEDs. Commissioner Audu Bosso said bulldozers and armoured vehicles were being brought in. Families reported a ransom demand of N50 million per victim, later a N1 billion total with a 24-hour deadline. Punch, via a TVC summary, said the demand fell to N5 million each; no second outlet has confirmed that.

The NYSC is a compulsory one-year national service for graduates, so its members are young people sent by the state to unfamiliar places. A mass kidnapping on a major road, followed by an explosive-laden camp, shows how well armed criminal groups in the South-East have become. How the rescue goes will shape trust in the scheme and in the police.

If you or a relative is due to report to a camp, expect more questions about travel by road and about escorts. Families should rely on official NYSC and police channels for updates and avoid paying or sharing money with anyone who claims to be negotiating. Do not forward unverified videos of the victims.

Security agencies say clearing the explosives first is the only way to avoid a massacre, and a slow, careful approach protects the captives.

Parents and critics say a drone found the camp yet nothing has moved for days, and that the NYSC should stop road postings through high-risk corridors.

The mined camp changes the maths. A fast raid risks the captives; waiting risks a ransom deal and a bad precedent. Watch for three things today: whether bulldozers actually reach the site, whether the police give a confirmed headcount, and whether the NYSC directorate says anything about travel for the next batch. If ransom figures keep shifting between outlets, treat each new number as a claim, not a fact.
