Four state assemblies approve the state police amendment; at least 24 of 36 must agree
Four state houses have backed state police: Osun, Oyo, Rivers and Edo (Legit, Guardian Nigeria, VON, Arise). Twenty-four of 36 are required. Osun voted first and unanimously; Rivers voted 25 to 0. The National Assembly said only the State Police Services Bill had been transmitted. Edo's vote rests on thinner sourcing.
State police would let governors command local forces, a major change from the single federal police, with risks of abuse and promises of faster response to local crime.
If the amendment becomes law, local policing could change in your state, but it will take time to create the forces.
Supporters say local police know the terrain and can act faster.
Critics fear governors could misuse them against opponents.
Four of 36 is a start. The real test is whether 20 more states follow and what safeguards the law contains.
