Security forces rescue the 20 abducted corps members in Imo; officials say they were unharmed

Police, the military, the DSS and other agencies rescued 20 prospective NYSC members at Amakohia Ubi, Owerri West, at about 4:28 pm on October 7 (Arise, VON, Legit, ThisDay, Nigeria Brief, Guardian Nigeria). Governor Uzodimma said they were unharmed. Officials did not say how the rescue was carried out, how the explosives at the camp were handled or whether a ransom was paid. Police said they are still hunting the kidnappers. Accounts differ on whether the victims were held six or seven days.

A safe return ends a week of fear for families and will be counted as a success by the security forces. The secrecy matters too: if a ransom was paid, it encourages more kidnapping. The earlier report of a mined camp makes the method especially important to explain.

If you or a relative is posted to a camp, travel with official guidance and tell family your route. Never pay anyone claiming to negotiate unless police are involved. Treat videos and lists circulated on social media with care.

Officials say a coordinated rescue shows the agencies can protect young people and that details must be withheld to protect future operations.

Critics ask why the public is not told how the captives were freed and whether money changed hands, and want the suspects prosecuted.

Good news, but unfinished. The test is whether the kidnappers are arrested and charged, and whether the NYSC changes how it moves corps members on risky roads. Watch for an official account of the operation and a statement on ransom from the police.
