Trump says Putin will release Russian diesel and eases sanctions for six months to cut fuel prices
Trump said on Truth Social on October 9 that Putin agreed to release 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons in December, with about 3 million more possible (CBS News, CNBC, NPR, Fortune, NBC News, Forbes). Treasury issued a general license for Russian diesel, with reported end dates of about April 2027. Zelenskyy condemned it. Forbes argued the effect on US fuel prices will be small. The Kremlin's confirmation was not seen.
It shows how high fuel costs are shaping foreign policy: a US administration that signed tough Russia sanctions in September is now relaxing them for diesel. It also tests the sanctions regime and Ukraine's support just before US elections.
If world diesel supply rises, import costs could ease over time, which would help transport and food prices. The effect on Nigerian pump prices depends on the naira, the refinery and local taxes, and will not be immediate.
Supporters say more diesel on the market lowers prices for ordinary people and that the waiver is temporary.
Critics, including Ukraine's president, say it rewards Moscow while the war goes on and that the quantities are promises from one side.
The key numbers come from Trump's own post, so treat the 3 million tons as an aspiration. Watch for three things: Russian confirmation, the exact waiver wording and whether diesel futures fall. If prices do not move within weeks, the political case weakens.
