Navi Pillay, South African jurist and former UN human rights chief, wins the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committee named Navi Pillay the 2026 Peace Prize laureate on October 9, citing her efforts to promote peace and international law (Euronews, CNN, RTE, Time, CBS News, NPR). She led UN human rights work from 2008 to 2014 and was an International Criminal Court judge. Frydnes said the international legal order is under pressure. A PRIO director said the award was not aimed at Trump. The ceremony is on December 10.

The prize puts international courts and human-rights law in the spotlight at a time when several governments, including major powers, are questioning them. For African readers it also marks the fifth South African winner.

The award itself changes nothing in daily life, but the themes, accountability and international justice, relate to Nigeria's own debates about conflicts, courts and rights.

Admirers say the choice honours a career spent holding governments and perpetrators to account.

Critics of international courts say they are slow and selective, and some had hoped for another winner.

A safe, principled pick that signals the committee's view of the moment. Watch how governments that dislike the ICC and UN rights bodies respond over the next days.
