Marketers raise pump prices as Tinubu's N66 petrol discount becomes the first big argument of the 2027 campaign

Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele announced a 30-day petrol discount on October 8. It is N66 a litre at NNPC stations for motorists paying through the NNPC Fuel App (Legit, Leadership). NNPC says it is relief funded from its own margin, not subsidy (Legit), and extended it to October 31 (Premium Times, Legit); one earlier report gave October 14. On Sunday the APC chairman said it is not a return to subsidy (Tribune), the Presidency called Atiku Abubakar's production subsidy a "mathematical fantasy" (Punch), Atiku called the cut a gimmick and Peter Obi called it reactive (Vanguard). Vanguard reported marketers raising pump prices by up to N29 a litre in Abuja and Lagos.

Fuel is the cost that reaches every household through transport and food prices. How the discount is paid for, who can claim it and what happens on November 1 will shape both inflation and the election argument.

If you drive, compare the price on the NNPC app with the pump price before you fill up, and keep the receipt of any digital payment. Expect shop and fare prices to adjust slowly, if at all.

The government says the discount is temporary relief that avoids reviving a costly subsidy and rewards a stable economy.

Opponents say a one-month, app-only cut is reactive electioneering that leaves out many drivers and does not fix prices.

A N66 cut on a price above N1,300 is about 5 percent, and it lasts weeks. The real test is whether independent stations lower prices and what replaces the discount on November 1. Watch NNPC's published price list, the cost NNPC reports for the cut and any change to the app-only rule.
