Tinubu says World Bank report proves reforms are working and tells states to spend higher revenues prudently

Tinubu welcomed the World Bank's October 2026 Nigeria Development Update, titled "Beyond the Federal Purse" (Daily Trust, Vanguard, Channels TV, Leadership, Tribune). He said removing the petrol subsidy stabilised the economy (Channels TV). Tribune quoted the report as projecting public debt falling from 40.0 percent of GDP in 2025 to 38.1 percent in 2026. Tinubu urged states to use higher revenues for living standards, health and education (Leadership) and conceded that more must be done for ordinary households (Vanguard).

The report is an outside assessment that the government will use in the campaign. It also shows that state governments now receive more money, which raises the question of how they spend it.

Better national numbers do not yet mean lower prices at home. Look at what your state government builds with its larger share.

The government says falling debt and higher revenues show the hard decisions worked.

Critics say headline numbers hide high living costs, and the pump price row shows relief is still needed.

Treat the report as evidence about government finances, not household budgets. Read the full text for what it says about inflation, poverty and state spending, which DailyDrop has not seen.
