Court refuses Euracare's bid to stop the inquest into the death of Chimamanda Adichie's son
Justice Aishat Opesanwo of the Lagos State High Court in Ikoyi on Monday dismissed an application by Eurapharma Care Services Nigeria Limited, which runs Euracare hospital, to halt the coroner's inquest into the death of Nkanu, son of the author Chimamanda Adichie (Leadership, Punch, Premium Times). Premium Times said the hospital argued that cremation made a post-mortem examination impossible and could leave the inquest relying on speculation. It said the ruling followed an objection by Ms Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege. Punch described the order as striking out the application.
An inquest is a legal inquiry into the cause of a death. The ruling clears the way for it to proceed.
Patients can ask a hospital for their records and about complaints procedures. Families can ask the coroner's office how an inquest works.
The family says an inquest is needed to establish what happened.
The hospital argued that the inquiry could not rely on physical evidence after cremation.
Watch for the inquest's start date and the witnesses. DailyDrop has not seen the hospital's response to the ruling.
