Doctors and health workers begin warning strikes at UCH Ibadan and FMC Abeokuta

Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, began a three-day warning strike at 8 a.m. on Monday over a persistent electricity crisis in the College of Medicine area (Leadership). Health workers at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, began a three-day warning strike after a medical laboratory scientist was stabbed by a patient's relative (Punch). Premium Times said the FMC strike began at 11 a.m. on Monday and is due to end at 8 a.m. on Thursday. Tribune also reported the stabbing, in Ogun.

Hospitals depend on steady power for theatres, labs and wards, and attacks on staff drive away workers. A warning strike is a short stoppage meant to force action before a longer one.

If you have an appointment at either hospital this week, call ahead. Emergencies are normally handled, but do not assume.

Staff say safe working conditions and electricity are basic needs for care.

Managers say budgets are tight and that security and power depend on funds they do not control.

Watch for a response from the hospital boards before Thursday and whether the strikes extend. One attack on a staff member and a power failure are different problems, and each needs its own fix.
