Dangote extends refinery share offer by two weeks to October 27 to draw more African investors
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals extended the closing date of its initial public offering to Tuesday, October 27, after approval by the Securities and Exchange Commission (Daily Trust, Punch, Channels TV, Vanguard). The offer had been due to close on October 13. Channels TV said the extra time supports efforts to open the sale to more African jurisdictions. Reuters, citing an executive and an adviser, put the extension at 10 days, which differs from the Nigerian reports. Earlier reports said 4.1 billion shares are offered at N525 each to raise about N2.15 trillion (Nairametrics, allAfrica, Intellinews). No final subscription total or revised allotment date has been published in the reports seen.
It is the largest share sale many Nigerians have been asked to join, and it competes for the same savings as bank deposits, treasury bills and other shares. A later close also shifts the date when shares can be allotted and listed.
If you plan to apply, do it only through a licensed stockbroker or bank, read the prospectus and invest only money you can leave untouched. You now have until October 27, but confirm the date and the price with your broker.
Supporters say more time lets more Africans take part and gives ordinary savers a stake in a major local industry.
Sceptics say an extension can signal that demand is below target, though no outlet seen has published a subscription figure.
Two weeks is a long time on a share sale. Watch for the company's subscription total, a new allotment date and whether the price or the 30 percent upsizing option changes. Until those appear, treat the reason given as the company's own.
