Shell agrees to sell its Nigerian domestic gas business to Vaaris Energy
Shell Petroleum B.V. signed an agreement to sell its full interest in Shell Nigeria Gas Group to Vaaris Energy Limited, pending approval (Punch, Tribune, Premium Times, ThisDay). Premium Times said Shell announced the deal on Tuesday as part of simplifying its portfolio. ThisDay added that Shell will concentrate on deepwater and LNG and that the business has a 170-kilometre pipeline network serving more than 130 customers; that detail came from one outlet. The price was not disclosed in the reports seen.
Shell says it is simplifying its portfolio. For Nigeria, a local owner takes over the customers and the regulatory obligations.
Industrial gas users served by the network should hear from the new owner about contracts. Households are unlikely to notice a change.
Supporters say Nigerian ownership can invest more in domestic gas.
Sceptics say the question is whether the buyer can finance the pipelines and keep supply reliable.
Approvals come next. Watch for the price, the regulator's decision and whether the supply contracts stay the same.
