Nigeria is elected to the UN Human Rights Council with 172 of 181 votes

Nigeria was elected to the UN Human Rights Council with 172 of 181 votes in the General Assembly, for a term from 2027 to 2029 (Leadership). Premium Times, citing the council's X account, said 15 countries were elected. Leadership listed Brazil, Burundi, the Dominican Republic, Germany and Ghana among the others. The vote totals for the other countries were not seen.

Seats on the council come with scrutiny: members are expected to uphold human rights and can be questioned about their own record.

The seat puts Nigeria's own rights record under closer notice.

The government will present the vote as international trust in Nigeria.

Rights groups will say a seat is a reason to be judged more closely, not a certificate.

A high vote is a diplomatic win. The measure that counts is how Nigeria handles complaints at home between now and 2027.
