Dave De K. guilty of abduction and death of Dean (4); Romy W. not guilty

In the case surrounding the Flemish toddler Dean, who died in 2022, two outcomes became known on Friday: one guilty verdict and one ruling that a Dutch suspect is not guilty.

Striking news appeared on Friday in the case surrounding the death of four-year-old Dean. According to five outlets, Dave De K. has been found guilty of abducting and killing the boy at Neeltje Jans, the former work island in Zeeland that is known as a visitor site at the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier. Later in the evening, De Telegraaf and Google Nieuws reported that the Dutch woman Romy W. is not guilty of involvement in the death of the Flemish child, who died in 2022. Both outcomes thus sit side by side in the reporting on the same day.

What we can say with certainty is limited, and we say so honestly. The guilty verdict against Dave De K. comes from several independent sources. The ruling on Romy W. comes, in our material, from two outlets. On the precise legal basis, the role she was accused of, the sentence for Dave De K. and the judges’ reasoning, we find nothing in the sources this edition relies on. We therefore leave those details out rather than guess at them. A case like this deserves accuracy over speed, all the more because a misunderstanding about who did what would be especially painful for the families involved.

For readers in the Netherlands the case is relevant for several reasons. According to the reports, the crime took place in Zeeland, while the victim came from Flanders. That makes it a cross-border case that touches both countries. One of the two suspects is moreover Dutch, so the ruling on her is followed with great interest here too. That the child was only four years old has given the case a heavy emotional charge since 2022, and that remains so after these rulings.

What is still open: whether either of the rulings can be challenged, how the bereaved react and what was said in the ruling about the motives. As soon as several outlets have something to report on that, we will include it in a coming edition. Until then this holds: what was established on Friday is a guilty verdict and a ruling that someone is not guilty, and no more than that.

AEX closes at a record, Wall Street slips on worries over AI investment

The AEX ended the week on Friday with a gain of 0.9 percent at 1,142.88 points, a record close. That is reported by De Telegraaf and Google Nieuws, and the closing price in our table matches. It is a good moment for Amsterdam investors, although one record close says little about what will happen in the coming weeks. On Wall Street the picture was exactly the opposite. The S&P 500 closed at 7,659.44 points, a loss of 1.09 percent, and De Telegraaf writes that the American stock markets ended sharply lower on fears about the scale of investment in artificial intelligence. That explanation comes from one source; how widely it is shared, we cannot establish. What is clear is that investors in Europe and the United States looked in different directions on Friday. What this means for you depends on where your money is. Pension funds and index funds with a heavy American share will show a decline on Friday, while funds with a Dutch tilt moved with the AEX. For those who do not invest, it is mainly a signal that sentiment around AI companies is sensitive. What happens on Monday, nobody knows.

Albert Heijn delivers no online groceries until at least Tuesday

Albert Heijn has canceled online orders and, according to De Telegraaf and Google Nieuws, will deliver no groceries through next Tuesday at least. Anyone who had planned a delivery slot for the weekend and the first days of the new week must therefore look for an alternative. A second report from our selection says the company maintains that no customer data have been stolen.

What we do not know is the cause of the interruption. The sources we have contain no technical explanation and no expected recovery time after Tuesday. The word “at least” in the report leaves room for a longer stop. Anyone with a subscription or a recurring order is best advised to check it in the app or on the store’s own site.

For households that depend on delivery, such as the elderly or people without a car, a stop of several days is noticeable. It stands to reason that other supermarkets with delivery services will get busier, but that is an expectation, not an established fact.

Freight train and bus collide at Channel Tunnel in Calais: 19 injured

On Thursday evening a freight train hit a bus at the entrance to the Channel Tunnel in France. According to De Telegraaf, the AD and Google Nieuws, nineteen people were injured. The accident happened in the French municipality in the Pas-de-Calais department, on the side of the link to the United Kingdom.

The nature of the injuries, the number of people on the bus and the cause of the collision are not in our sources. There is also nothing to be found in the material this edition relies on about the consequences for rail traffic through the tunnel. First reports mentioned only several injured; the figure of nineteen came later from further reporting.

If you travel through the tunnel or via Calais this weekend, check the carrier’s current travel information before you leave. We cannot say more than that with the facts available. As soon as several outlets report what the cause was and whether rail traffic has been disrupted, we will include it in a coming edition, with the sources.

Deadly shooting at American elementary school; White House spokesperson leaves after days

A 16-year-old boy shot and killed a teacher and three children at an American elementary school, according to five outlets. Early reports spoke of multiple victims and said the shooter had been killed; exactly how the perpetrator died is not in our sources. The Dutch media reported the news widely on Thursday and Friday.

In Washington, Katie Zacharia, the new White House spokesperson, is leaving after only a few days. NOS, De Telegraaf and Google Nieuws cite American media as the source, including Fox News; we find no confirmation from the White House itself.

Finally, De Telegraaf, with Trouw and Google Nieuws, reports that allies of President Trump are openly discussing far-reaching measures around the coming midterms, with even martial law not ruled out. Those are statements by allies, not a government decision. The elections themselves are scheduled for early November, so in the coming weeks this conversation in the United States is unlikely to fall silent. For Dutch readers the main thing is: watch who says what, and whether it is a proposal, a thought experiment or a decision.
