Philippines ends Asian Games with 29 medals, its biggest haul in 60 years

Team Philippines closed the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on October 4 with 29 medals: four gold, nine silver and 16 bronze, the largest haul since 42 medals in 1966 (GMA News, Manila Times via Newswav). Carlos Yulo won floor and vault, EJ Obiena cleared a Games-record 5.91 metres in the pole vault, and Jeus Yape won the first Asian Games taekwondo gold for the country. Jeus Yape carried the flag at the closing ceremony. The Philippine Olympic Committee had targeted eight golds. Alex Eala took tennis bronze after losing her semifinal on October 1 to China's Wang Xiyu.

It is the strongest multi-sport result in six decades and a signal ahead of future Games.

Medal winners often draw new sponsors and public funding for training, which affects how many athletes can compete in future.

A record haul under target shows depth but also unmet goals; the useful test is funding for sports beyond the stars.
