PSEi slides for a fifth straight day to 5,629.03 as factory activity shrinks; inflation data due Tuesday

The PSEi ended Friday, October 2, at 5,629.03, down 0.44 points (0.01%), its fifth losing session in a row (Inquirer, Daily Tribune). Foreign investors sold a net ₱1.25 billion; turnover was ₱5.56 billion (Inquirer). The peso closed at ₱62.535 to the dollar, up 24 centavos, per the Tribune only. The S&P Global Philippines manufacturing PMI dropped to 49.6 from 54.9, the first reading below 50 since April, with weaker new orders and exports and the lowest business confidence since January (GMA News, Philstar, Trading Economics).

A fifth straight decline, a weaker factory sector and a peso near record lows add up to a cautious market ahead of the inflation release. Oil prices tied to the Iran conflict keep pressing on costs.

A weak peso raises the price of imported fuel, food and gadgets. If you invest in stocks, the market has fallen for five sessions and small daily moves hide that trend.

The index barely moved on Friday and the peso strengthened a little, so selling may be easing.

A falling factory index, rising oil and high yields are real pressures, and the inflation figure could push the central bank toward another rate hike.

One flat day does not end a losing streak. The better test is Tuesday: if inflation lands near the upper end of forecasts, expect talk of another rate hike and a nervous market. Watch peso moves around ₱62.5 and 62.9.
