Senate impeachment court has set no verdict date for Sara Duterte, says Pangilinan; hearings resume this week

Sen. Kiko Pangilinan said on October 3 that the impeachment court has not set a verdict timetable, and that the December 16 date was a spokesperson's estimate, not a court schedule (Daily Tribune). The trial began July 6 with 92 trial days approved (Philstar, Al Jazeera). The court's calendar has full-day hearings on October 5 to 9 and 12 to 15 and a pause from October 16 to November 8 for budget work (Tribune, GMA News). The Day 32 session originally set for September 30 was cancelled for a "strategic procedural pause", GMA reported. Conviction needs 16 of 24 votes. Duterte denies the charges, which include unexplained wealth and threats against the president.

The vice president is the second-highest official and a likely contender for the presidency in 2028, so a verdict date shapes the politics of the next year. A long break for the budget stretches the trial into November or beyond.

Ordinary services are not affected, but the outcome decides whether Duterte can run for office again and how the two political camps line up before the next election.

A flexible schedule lets both sides present evidence fully and keeps the court from rushing a decision with major consequences.

Open-ended timing prolongs uncertainty, and critics say delay favours a chamber that includes Duterte allies.

Watch the calendar, not predictions. If the court really recesses from October 16 to November 8, the earliest realistic verdict moves to late November, and any date offered before that is still a guess.
