PSEi jumps 2.03% to 5,743.21, its biggest gain in over a month, as bets on a U.S. rate hike fade

The PSEi closed at 5,743.21 on October 5, up 114.18 points (2.03%), after five straight declines. The all shares index gained 1.46% to 3,198.26. Turnover was ₱3.7 billion (BusinessWorld). The peso ended at ₱62.621 per dollar from ₱62.535 (BusinessWorld, GMA News). Analysts cited lower odds of a Fed hike after a weak U.S. jobs report; the Manila Times said inflation and tight liquidity would steer the next moves.

One strong session after five declines shows how sensitive local stocks are to U.S. interest-rate expectations and to oil.

A rally on light volume can fade. If you invest, avoid reading one 2 percent day as a turnaround before the inflation data.

Easing hike bets and cheaper money abroad are good for emerging markets and could support the peso.

Turnover was thin and the peso weakened slightly, so conviction is low.

Use Tuesday's inflation print as the test. A figure above the 6.4 to 7.4 percent central bank range would put the rebound at risk.
