Marcos says alleged China money to a Duterte family firm would be a national security threat “at the highest level” if proven; prosecutors rest their impeachment case today
Marcos said on October 11 that alleged Chinese funds received by a company linked to Vice President Sara Duterte would be a threat to national security “at the highest level” if proven (GMA News, Manila Times, Inquirer). The funds were described at the Senate impeachment trial by the Anti-Money Laundering Council: about ₱319 million in remittances from China and Hong Kong to a food company with Duterte’s husband among its incorporators (Reuters, Daily Tribune, Oct 6). Duterte denies wrongdoing and her lawyers obtained confirmation that no document ties the Chinese government to the senders, although Sen. Risa Hontiveros said at least two senders were government-linked. Mans Carpio said card spending shown at the trial was from personal money. The House prosecution said it will rest its case on Monday, October 12, and the defence is expected to be challenged to seek dismissal (Philstar, Inquirer).
A sitting vice president, a possible foreign funding source and a rival great power meet in one case. If any government link were shown, it would move from an impeachment question to a security one. If none is shown, the claim weakens the prosecution’s case.
Expect the trial to dominate headlines this week as prosecutors finish and the defence begins. The security angle could affect how Manila handles China policy, but nothing in the reports changes daily life yet.
The president and prosecutors say foreign money tied to a top official is a serious risk that deserves full examination.
The defence says the remittances are business transactions, no Chinese government link has been documented and the allegation is political.
The key word in Marcos’s comment is “if.” Watch for three things: whether the National Security Council publishes a finding, whether the defence calls the Anti-Money Laundering Council’s witness back, and whether any senator-judge walks out, as Padilla has hinted.
