Palace defends Marcos’s “balde” advice as critics demand a real plan for a Super El Niño

Marcos’s advice to collect rainwater in buckets drew criticism, and the Palace told critics to “sit down and listen” (GMA News, Inquirer), adding that the bucket was one of several measures (ABS-CBN). Atom urged solid action (Inquirer), while Gatchalian called the advice practical (Inquirer). Speaker Dy said the House raised agriculture funds ahead of the drought (Inquirer), Aquino asked lenders to waive loan interest (Inquirer, Manila Times), the DENR set up early-warning systems (GMA News) and the DOE warned of more red alerts in the Visayas in 2027 (Rappler).

A strong El Niño means less rain, less water for farms and hydropower, and higher power demand. The question is whether the government’s measures match that scale.

Expect pressure on water supply and farm prices, and possible power alerts. Store water safely, save electricity and follow local advisories.

The Palace and Gatchalian say simple steps such as saving rainwater are practical and only one part of the plan.

Critics say a bucket is not a policy and want funding, early warnings and relief for farmers.

Judge the response by its budget and its timetable, not by one remark. Ask for the full list of measures, who pays for them and when each begins.
