Palace confirms Trump will attend the ASEAN Summit in Manila in November, his first visit since 2017

Malacañang confirmed on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump will attend the 49th ASEAN Summit in Manila next month (Inquirer, GMA News, BusinessWorld, Philstar). Press Officer Claire Castro said, “It is confirmed,” but gave no details of the visit (Inquirer). The Manila Times reported that UN Secretary-General António Guterres will attend as well and gave the dates as November 16 to 18. Philstar said it will be Trump’s first visit since 2017, the last time the Philippines hosted the summit. BusinessWorld tied the announcement to Philippine–US talks on a multibillion-dollar technology hub in New Clark City.

The Philippines hosts the regional meeting this year, and a visit by a US president raises the profile of any trade, investment and security announcements that come with it.

Expect tighter security and possible road closures in the capital around the summit dates. The reports reviewed give no itinerary, venues or routes.

Supporters of closer US ties see a visit as a chance to firm up investment and defence cooperation.

Sceptics will ask what the Philippines gets in return; no agenda has been released.

A confirmation is not a programme. Watch for the schedule, whether a Marcos–Trump meeting is set, and whether the New Clark City technology agreement is ready to sign by then.
