US employers add only 29,000 jobs in September and the unemployment rate rises to 4.2%

US payrolls rose by 29,000 in September, below forecasts of 84,000 to 90,000; unemployment rose to 4.2%. July and August were revised down by 60,000 combined, and July is now a loss of 10,000. Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% on the month and 3.0% on the year (UPI, FT Portfolios, CREDaily, Virginia Business).

A weak labour market lowers the odds of a Fed rate rise.

A softer dollar path helps emerging-market currencies and remittance values.

Some economists blame the late Labor Day timing for the weak print.

Others see a genuine slowdown after revisions.

One report is noise; the revisions are the news.
