Governor’s rule floated for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; Bilawal says Centre is ready but PPP wants a political solution
Federal ministers have raised the possibility of governor’s rule or an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Dawn quoted Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari as saying the Centre was ready to impose an emergency but the PPP preferred a political solution. Afridi has rejected both and warned of an “unprecedented” reaction if governor’s rule is imposed (The Express Tribune, Arab News Pakistan). No order had been issued by Monday morning.
Governor’s rule under the constitution would hand the province’s executive powers to the federal government through the governor, and has to be approved by parliament.
For residents, the immediate effect would be tighter security, possible curfews and communication restrictions. For investors, it adds political risk.
Supporters of the step argue the province cannot be allowed to be used to pressure the capital.
Opponents say it would deepen the standoff and is a political tool aimed at an elected government.
Treat the talk as leverage until an order appears. The PPP’s stance is the key swing factor.
