Trump announces an “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine; Zelenskyy says it was news to him

Trump announced on 11 October that Russia and Ukraine agreed to an energy truce (Reuters, BBC, Bloomberg). Zelenskyy told Axios he had not been told and said Ukraine would agree if Russia accepts; Reuters reported Ukraine awaiting details while Russia kept attacking. The Kyiv Independent reported a Russian strike on a Kharkiv power plant soon after the announcement. The FT reported a US threat to block arms over Ukrainian refinery strikes, and Reuters reported a Republican senator calling the Russian diesel deal possibly illegal.

An energy truce would cut strikes on refineries and power plants, and could soften oil prices; but a truce nobody has confirmed can collapse quickly.

Fuel prices in Pakistan follow world prices and the rupee, so any move in crude shows up in petrol prices at the next fortnightly review.

Washington says the diesel deal and truce serve American consumers and could open talks.

Kyiv and several European governments say concessions to Moscow reward attacks and weaken pressure for peace.

Until Moscow says yes in public, treat it as an announcement, not a ceasefire. Watch the first night’s strikes on energy sites.
