UK prime minister says Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were behind the RAF Fairford incident

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Monday that a suspected plot targeting the RAF Fairford air base was “highly likely” to have been coordinated in Iran and almost certainly directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (Reuters via Straits Times, SCMP, DW). Britain summoned Iran’s ambassador; Iran’s envoy rejected the claim, and Haaretz quoted Tehran calling it “unfounded and malicious speculation”. DW reported the scare led to the withdrawal of US B-1 bombers from the base.

It adds a Europe-based front to the Iran confrontation that is already closing Hormuz and straining Gulf security.

No direct effect on Pakistan; it raises the temperature around Iran, a neighbour.

London says its intelligence points to the IRGC.

Iran rejects the allegation and offers to cooperate on an inquiry.

Attribution is a UK government claim; the evidence has not been published.
