Afghan authorities suspend BBC radio broadcasts nationwide

Afghan authorities suspended BBC radio broadcasts across the country, the broadcaster said (Reuters, via the Straits Times); the BBC reported that its FM transmissions were halted, and De Telegraaf quoted the Taliban authorities citing repeated violations.

The BBC is one of the main sources of news in Afghanistan’s local languages.

Pakistan’s border regions listen to the same broadcasts; DW says emergency rule in KP could strain Islamabad–Kabul relations.

The restriction comes on the same day the KP emergency was debated. Watch for a BBC statement and for whether other foreign broadcasters are also restricted.
