Markets: Pakistan’s Tuesday close not confirmed; Wall Street slips on chip stocks and bank results; Brent eases to $105.69

DailyDrop could not confirm Tuesday’s KSE-100 close or the dollar rate in two sources. On Wall Street the Nasdaq fell 0.15 per cent to 27,204.38 and the Dow 0.35 per cent to 51,670.10 (Reuters via the Straits Times), and other outlets also called the main indexes slightly lower, led by chipmakers. Goldman Sachs and Citigroup beat estimates, Wells Fargo’s profit rose and JPMorgan missed (Reuters). Williams and Collins of the Fed spoke of further rate hikes. Brent settled at $105.69 and WTI at $94.14 (FinancialJuice). Asian shares had fallen on AI worries and the Kospi lost more than 5 per cent.

Higher US rates strengthen the dollar and make borrowing dearer for emerging markets, and dear oil adds to Pakistan’s import bill.

Fuel prices are revised daily in Pakistan; petrol was Rs392.66 a litre on 14 October (Business Recorder).

Today’s decisive numbers are US inflation and oil, not anything on the Karachi screen. If US prices come in hot, expect the Fed talk to harden and emerging-market currencies to feel it.
