At least five killed and 41 hurt as the Rehman Baba Express derails near Multan
The Rehman Baba Express, running from Karachi to Peshawar, derailed near Sher Shah railway station in Multan district early on Tuesday. Business Recorder’s Wednesday report said at least five people died and 41 were injured. Earlier reports from AFP (via IOL), the Straits Times and Mint said four were killed, and Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi confirmed four deaths. Brazil’s G1, citing police and a railways spokesman, counted about 30 injured. Mint said all 14 coaches derailed, that rescue work and an inquiry began and that Pakistan Railways arranged alternative transport and refunds. The cause remained unknown.
Business Recorder says the crash renewed concern over railway safety and maintenance.
If you travel on the Karachi–Peshawar line or through southern Punjab, confirm services with Pakistan Railways first.
Outlets disagree between four and five dead, so treat every figure as provisional. The useful questions are whether the inquiry will be published, who inspected the track last and what the speed was. Without those the incident will be forgotten by the next derailment.
