Bank of America is fined $1.2 billion over money-laundering and sanctions failures

US regulators fined Bank of America more than $1.2 billion for money-laundering and sanctions violations (Bloomberg, Reuters, Business Recorder). Reuters said the bank missed profit estimates on weaker capital-markets business and booked a $1.2 billion charge. Bloomberg reported bond-trading revenue down 17 per cent to $2.55 billion and equity trading down 10 per cent to $2.51 billion. The Financial Times said profits dropped 17 per cent. The shares slid on the day, according to Bloomberg’s closing report.

Penalties of this size show that regulators in the United States are pressing banks hard on financial-crime controls, which affects banks that clear dollars for the rest of the world.

No direct effect. Pakistan’s own banks are judged by the same standards, and the country spent years on the Financial Action Task Force’s grey list before leaving it in 2022.

The profit hit is small against the bank’s size; the signal to other banks is the real cost.
