Sweden announced on October 6 that it will send a Patriot system to Poland and from December take over from the Netherlands the protection of NATO’s logistics hub in Rzeszów-Jasionka (Euronews, Defence24, Notes from Poland, xyz.pl). About a hundred soldiers will take part in the mission, mainly from the air defense regiment in Halmstad, and the unit comes under NATO air command. The Swedish government’s decision applies to the end of the year; Minister Pål Jonson announced an intention to extend it to June if the Riksdag agrees. The number of sets was not given. Poland’s MON confirmed the change. The Netherlands has kept its batteries in Poland since December last year. On September 30 Sweden also announced the return of its Gripens to patrolling the skies over Poland (Reuters via The Star).
Rzeszów-Jasionka is the main transshipment point for aid to Ukraine, so protecting it concerns all support for Kyiv. The change shows that duties in defending the eastern flank rotate among allies.
For residents of Podkarpacie it is a continuation of the presence of allied troops, not a new change. For everyone else: another signal that the region’s security is a shared task.
Rotation of allies ensures continuity of the hub’s protection and shares the burden among NATO states.
The Riksdag’s consent to an extension is not certain, and the lack of information on the number of sets makes it hard to assess the real defensive capability.
More important than the announcement is whether protection will be continuous after December and after the elections in Sweden. Two things are worth checking: when the Riksdag will take up the extension and how many sets will actually arrive.

Sweden to send a Patriot battery to Rzeszów and take over protection of NATO’s hub for Ukraine from the Dutch in December
About a hundred Swedish soldiers are to protect Rzeszów-Jasionka airport, through which aid for Ukraine flows. The decision runs to the end of the year, and Stockholm wants to extend the mission to June if the Riksdag agrees.
Sweden announced on Tuesday, October 6, that it will send a Patriot air defense system to Poland and take over from the Netherlands the protection of NATO’s logistics hub in Rzeszów-Jasionka, through which aid for Ukraine passes, report Euronews, Defence24 and Notes from Poland. The Netherlands has had its batteries there since December last year. The Swedish unit, about a hundred soldiers and officers, comes mainly from the air defense regiment in Halmstad and will operate under NATO command as part of integrated air and missile defense.
According to Defence24, the government’s decision in Stockholm applies to the end of the year, but Defense Minister Pål Jonson announced an intention to extend the mission to June, provided the Riksdag agrees. Sweden did not say how many Patriot sets will go to Poland. Poland’s Ministry of National Defense (MON) confirmed the change, and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz thanked the Netherlands for its support so far. Earlier, on September 30, the government in Stockholm announced that from October it would again send Gripen aircraft to NATO’s air policing mission in Poland (Reuters via The Star).
