Second school attack in two days: 15-year-old kills a school caretaker and wounds two people in Leszczydół-Nowiny near Wyszków

The principal and a teacher overpowered the attacker even though they were wounded themselves. The prime minister says the boy had a helmet with a camera to film the attack, and the motive is still unknown to investigators.

On Thursday, October 8, at about 9 a.m., a 15-year-old former pupil attacked three staff members of a primary school in Leszczydół-Nowiny in Wyszków County in Mazovia with a sharp implement, report TVP Info, Bezprawnik, AP and Notes from Poland. The first person attacked was a 37-year-old school caretaker, who died. The principal heard screams and tried to stop the attacker, and a teacher helped him; both were wounded but, according to police spokeswoman Katarzyna Kucharska, managed to overpower the perpetrator. According to a spokesman for the Interior Ministry (MSWiA), the lives of the two wounded are not in danger.

The perpetrator currently attends a vocational school and had three knives on him. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he also had a helmet with a camera, which he took in order to film the attack. The motives are so far unknown, and reports of an online “challenge” come from early, unverified information. It is the second attack on a school within two days, after Wednesday’s attack in Ostrołęka, where a 19-year-old wounded nine people. On Wednesday police also detained a 17-year-old in Sierpc who was planning an attack.

Tusk convenes an urgent meeting and asks for police in every school at least once a day

Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an urgent meeting at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister (KPRM) at 1 p.m. on Thursday, to which the ministers of the interior, digital affairs, education and health, the coordinator of the special services and the national police commander, Gen. Marek Boroń, were summoned, report xyz.pl, Eska and TVP Info. After the meeting Tusk asked for a decision that police appear in every school at least once a day, which is meant to reduce the risk of copycat attacks.

The prime minister also pointed out that rules must be introduced allowing quick online blocking of incitement to violence and hate speech, which the president vetoed in January. Education Minister Barbara Nowacka recalled the vetoed act on students’ rights and obligations (Notes from Poland).

Sejm passes act on blocking illegal content online, 242 votes in favor

The Sejm passed on Thursday evening an act enabling courts and authorities to order the blocking of illegal content online; 242 deputies voted in favor, 61 against, and 136 abstained, reports Bankier.pl. The bill is a response to President Karol Nawrocki’s January veto of an earlier version, which implemented the EU Digital Services Act (DSA). It will now go to the Senate.

The government presented the act as part of its response to the school attacks, and Donald Tusk noted that its earlier version had been vetoed (xyz.pl, Notes from Poland). According to one description, the act allows blocking content related to 27 prohibited acts. The president justified the veto by freedom of speech. DailyDrop has not yet seen the position of the Chancellery of the President on the new version.
