The euro falls to a 17-month low as worries over French debt grow
The euro fell to its lowest against the US dollar in 17 months on Monday, CNA and the Business Times reported, on concern about France's public debt. The Business Times said the dollar was near the highs it reached before the US Liberation Day tariffs. Investors had judged France's 2027 budget plan too soft.
A weak euro and a strong dollar affect Singapore through trade and through the MAS's exchange-rate policy, which manages the Singapore dollar against a basket of currencies.
Holidays and purchases priced in euros get a little cheaper for Singapore dollar holders.
Watch French bond yields. If they keep rising, pressure spreads to the rest of the eurozone.
