CASE calls for a law to protect prepaid packages as consumer losses climb past S$3.7 million

The Consumers Association of Singapore called for mandatory safeguards for consumers who buy prepaid packages, after a surge in losses. The Business Times reported that consumer losses linked to True Group had reached S$3.78 million and that CASE wants a law on prepayments. Mothership reported losses from fitness closures of S$3.82 million. The Straits Times also carried CASE's call.

When a business with prepaid customers closes, those customers usually rank behind other creditors and recover little.

Buy shorter packages, keep your receipts, and pay by credit card where possible so you may be able to claim a chargeback.

A law would protect consumers who cannot judge a business's finances.

Mandatory escrow or insurance raises costs for small businesses, which may pass them on in prices.

Watch whether the Ministry of Trade and Industry responds. Other places already require deposit protection for some prepaid services.
