Physics Nobel goes to Francis Halzen for turning Antarctic ice into a neutrino telescope
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics to Francis Halzen, as sole laureate, for his contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos from space. IceCube uses a cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice fitted with light sensors. The Straits Times reported the award.
Neutrinos pass through almost anything, so they carry information from the most violent places in the universe.
Basic science, but the sensors and data methods spread into other fields.
Chemistry follows on Wednesday.
