Showers ease the haze a little but the air stays unhealthy, and Indonesia welcomes Singapore's offer to help fight the fires

Air quality stayed unhealthy on Saturday 10 October but improved slightly, with showers helping (CNA). NEA forecast the 24-hour PSI to remain in the unhealthy to high unhealthy range, better than Friday's forecast of unhealthy to low very unhealthy (Straits Times). Friday's noon PSI of 181 in the central region was the season's high (CNA). The Haze Task Force said N95 masks go to more vulnerable individuals once the 24-hour PSI exceeds 200, and mask vending machines are ready for deployment (CNA). Grace Fu said Singapore stands ready to assist Indonesia and is in touch with her counterpart (CNA, Straits Times); an Indonesian official said ground crews would be more useful than helicopters in low visibility (Straits Times). Malaysia's Health Ministry reported rising respiratory infections and conjunctivitis (Straits Times). Grand Prix crowds carried on, though a restaurant manager said fewer locals came (CNA).

Haze is a health issue first: fine particles reach deep into the lungs, and children, older people and people with heart or lung conditions are most at risk. It is also a test of regional cooperation, because the fires are in Indonesia and the smoke crosses borders, so the real fix lies on the ground there.

Check the PSI on the NEA website or the myENV app before outdoor plans, and cut back on strenuous activity when it is in the unhealthy range. If you are vulnerable, find out how to get an N95 mask before the PSI passes 200. If you are going to the race tonight, bring a mask.

The tiered plan gives people certainty. Clear PSI thresholds for masks and school decisions, plus early warnings from NEA, let families prepare.

An unhealthy reading is already harmful, and waiting for 200 before acting may be late for the vulnerable. Offers of help are welcome, but only fewer fires will end the haze.

The slight improvement is from weather, not from fewer fires, so do not read it as the end. Watch three things today: whether the 24-hour PSI approaches 200, whether Indonesia turns its welcome into visible ground firefighting, and whether the wind shifts. Persistent smoke would carry the problem into the new week.
