Portugal provisionally suspends Cristiano Ronaldo after his walkout from the national team
The Portuguese Football Federation opened disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo and provisionally suspended him, after he left the national team camp, reports said (Straits Times, CNA, ABC, Le Monde, Spiegel). The case was given urgent status (El Mundo). Le Monde dated the walkout to 30 September and ANSA linked it to a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus. ESPN said Al Nassr fans showed their support when he scored for his club.
Ronaldo, 41, is the country's captain and record scorer, and any ban touches its qualifying plans and the squad's mood.
Football fans in Singapore will see his absence from the national team until the case is decided.
The federation's president has said the squad wants its captain back, so a negotiated end is possible. The length of the suspension is the thing to watch.
