India's "cockroach" youth movement presses on with protests in Delhi after its leaders are freed
Police detained protesters seeking the ouster of India's chief election commissioner, then released the leaders of the "cockroach" movement, CNA reported. Reuters, citing a lawyer, said founder Abhijeet Dipke was freed, and the Financial Times said a court ordered his release. Bloomberg said parts of Delhi were under lockdown for a second day as the Cockroach Janta Party pressed on with its call for protests over a contentious revision of voter rolls. The BBC said Delhi was braced for more protests.
Voter-roll revisions decide who can vote. A youth-led movement testing the election commission shows how tense the issue has become in the world's most populous democracy.
If you travel to Delhi, expect closures and delays. For Singapore readers, India is a major trade and investment partner.
Protesters say the revision can strike eligible voters off the rolls and want the election chief to go.
DailyDrop has not seen the election commission's response, so its side is not yet represented.
Watch whether the protests grow beyond Delhi and whether courts take up the voter-roll question.
