Pope Leo says he will have surgery this week to remove a small growth from his lung

Pope Leo XIV, 71, said on Sunday that doctors found a small nodule on his lung during a recent health check and that he will have surgery in the first days of this week to remove it (Reuters, BBC, Guardian, CNA, Straits Times). The BBC and the Guardian quoted him saying it was identified "at a very early stage".

The health of the head of the Catholic Church affects the Vatican's calendar of events and travel.

DailyDrop has not seen details on the hospital, the surgeon or recovery time. A nodule is not always cancer, and the Pope did not say what it is.
