Bergs stuns Alcaraz in Shanghai, and Zverev is guaranteed year-end world No. 1
Unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs beat Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz 7-5 7-6(4) in the round of 32 at the Shanghai Masters on Monday, which also confirmed Alexander Zverev as the year-end world No. 1 (Straits Times, CNA). The Philippine Daily Inquirer said Zverev, 29, won his first two Grand Slam titles this year and was helped by Jannik Sinner’s season-ending injury.
A year-end No. 1 ranking is the sport’s main yearly honour.
