Singapore refreshes its cyber strategy to use “best available” AI, as Shanmugam presses tech firms for full transparency

Singapore unveiled an updated national cybersecurity strategy, with Senior Minister K Shanmugam saying the country will act earlier, at national scale and at the speed of malicious attackers (CNA). CNA reported that it will use the “best available” AI models for cyber defence, and the Straits Times said it adds a national tool to block malware and phishing sites. A second Straits Times report said professional standards for cyber defenders are being developed as business judgement and AI proficiency become more important. The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore has posted the strategy on its site, and OpenGov Asia and GovInsider also covered it. Mr Shanmugam also said Singapore has asked major technology firms for full transparency and quicker information-sharing about AI risks after a hack of the Australian government (Straits Times); the firms have shown “an attitude of cooperation”, but it is “a work in progress” (CNA). A UN special envoy said minimum safety standards and independent testing are a must to build trust in AI (Straits Times).

AI can speed up both attacks and defences. If tech firms share information late, a hole found abroad can be exploited here before anyone is warned.

The tool to block malware and phishing sites should reach ordinary users, but DailyDrop has not seen how or when. Meanwhile, keep software updated and be wary of links in unexpected messages.

The state argues that speed and early action, backed by AI, are now essential in defence (Shanmugam, CNA).

A UN special envoy told the Straits Times that minimum safety standards and independent testing are a must, which points beyond voluntary cooperation.

The test of the strategy is whether firms really hand over information fast, since cooperation is “a work in progress”. Watch for named deadlines or reporting rules, and for what the new blocking tool does to ordinary users’ access.
