Public hospitals and clinics recover after a disruption of about nine hours that hit call lines and systems

Call-centre lines across NHG Health institutions, including four hospitals, became unavailable on Tuesday 13 October, and NUH and SGH reported system disruptions of their own (CNA). The NHG Health hospitals are Tan Tock Seng, Khoo Teck Puat, Woodlands and Yishun Community Hospital (CNA). NHG Health said on Facebook that it was working to restore access (Straits Times). The Business Times and the Straits Times said patients should expect longer waits, and AsiaOne reported that NHG Health, NUHS and SingHealth institutions were all affected. Later AsiaOne reported services fully restored, and CNA described a nine-hour disruption from which public healthcare clusters had recovered, with most patients at seven institutions reporting few or no issues. The cause was not stated in the reports seen.

Hospitals and clinics depend on linked systems for appointments, records and phone lines. An outage that touches several clusters at once shows how much of daily care runs through shared networks.

If you had an appointment on Tuesday and could not reach the hospital, call again today; some services may still be catching up. For anything urgent, go to the emergency department rather than waiting on a phone line.

Institutions kept care running and most visited patients saw few or no problems (CNA).

DailyDrop has not seen an explanation of the cause, so questions about resilience and patient data remain unanswered.

Restoration is good news; explanation is the missing piece. Watch for a statement on the cause, on whether patient data was exposed, and on what backup plans exist for phone lines when systems fail.
