China’s September exports beat forecasts, and imports rise 31 per cent

China’s exports in September blew past forecasts and imports accelerated, CNA and the Straits Times reported, with Reuters and the South China Morning Post carrying the same data. The Straits Times said imports rose 31.0 per cent, against 28.2 per cent in August and an economists’ forecast of 24.5 per cent. DailyDrop has not seen the export growth figure from two outlets. Separately, the IMF’s managing director said on Wednesday that China must shift away from export-led growth towards domestic consumption (Straits Times).

Strong Chinese trade lifts demand across Asia, including for Singapore’s ports and electronics suppliers, but a large surplus invites pushback from trading partners.

Strong regional trade is good for Singapore’s ports and electronics makers. It also keeps pressure on shipping and commodity prices.

Fast import growth can be read as a sign of strong domestic demand and tech spending.

The IMF’s call for China to rely less on exports points to the risk of a very large surplus.

Check the export growth figure before drawing a conclusion. The next test is whether imports keep growing faster than forecast.
