Government studies grants for firms that redesign jobs around flexible workloads

The government is exploring grants and incentives for employers that redesign jobs so that they can be done with flexible workloads, the Straits Times and CNA reported. Acting Manpower Minister Jasmin Lau said it is studying which jobs and sectors are best suited and where to begin (Straits Times, CNA). She said workers in such roles must be prepared for their pay to vary with their output (CNA). DailyDrop has not seen the amount of any grant or a start date.

Flexible-workload jobs could help people who cannot work fixed hours, such as carers and older workers, stay in work. The trade-off is income that moves with output.

Nothing changes yet. If your employer offers a flexible role, ask how pay is calculated and what happens in a slow month.

Grants can lower the cost for employers to try new job designs and widen who can take part in the workforce.

Pay that varies with output shifts income risk onto workers, who may be least able to bear it.

The sectors chosen first will show how serious this is. Watch for the grant size and for safeguards on pay.
